The Department of Islamic Thought and Civilization belongs to the Faculty of Islamic Pedagogy of the University of Zenica. It was founded in the academic year 2006. Since its establishment, the head of the Department has been Prof. Nusret Isanović.

The teaching-scientific and scientific-research area of work of the Department of Islamic Thought and Civilization of the University of Zenica is the organization and implementation of teaching within the first, second and third cycles of study, the development of scientific-research personnel and research and development in the field of humanities, the field of Islamic philosophy. , cultures and civilizations.

The Department of Islamic Thought and Civilization organizes classes (lectures and exercises) at the Department of Islamic Religious Education, Social Pedagogy, Preschool Education and Arabic Language and Literature of the Faculty of Islamic Pedagogy of the University of Zenica. The Department of Islamic Thought and Civilization provides research and scientific support to all departments at the Faculty of Islamic Pedagogy.

In 2009, the Department of Islamic Thought and Civilization together with the "Ibn Sina" Institute in Sarajevo, the Iranian Cultural Center in Sarajevo and the "Mula Sadra" Foundation organized two round tables under the working titles "Džemaluddin Afghani and Muslim Modernity" and "Religious Concept of Education" and education". In 2012, in cooperation with the Center for Advanced Studies (Sarajevo), the Faculty of Islamic Sciences in Sarajevo, the Faculty of Islamic Theology in Skopje (Macedonia), the Faculty of Islamic Sciences in Priština (Kosovo) organized a round table and a professional seminar entitled "Studies of Islamic Culture and civilizations in the Balkans".

Also, the department hosted foreign lecturers on several occasions, and in January 2012, the Department of Islamic Thought and Civilization, in cooperation with the "Ibn Sina" Institute, organized study visits to scientific, research and academic institutions in Iran. Teachers from the Faculty of Islamic Pedagogy visited, among others, Tehran University, "Shahid Beheshti" University in Tehran, Family Institute in Tehran, Institute of Psychology in Tehran, National Library in Tehran, Institute of Islamic and Social Studies in Qom, Research Institute and education "Imam Khomeini" in Koma and Ayatollah Mar'ashi Library in Koma.
